Margaret Cannon Moore, Margaret Akins
1908 – 1979
Margaret Moore, who the Afro American called “a great lady” was a senior citizen advocate and active in civic Newark life. After her death, the Court Tower Apartments were named in her honor. In 1971, she was cited as one of the NJ Afro American Women of the Year.
Margaret was director of senior programs at Fuld Neighborhood House, director of the Fuld Senior Citizens Center. Later she was deputy director of Newark’s Office of Elderly Affairs. Margaret was also director of research at Rutgers on Black senior citizens and a member of the Newark Senior Citizen Commission, supervising the Homemaker Program. She was previously a caseworker for the Division of Welfare for many years.

Margaret was also President of the Ladie’s Society of Bethesda Baptist Church, vice president of the Board of the Emmanuel Senior Citizen Day Center, a member of the National and State Councils of Senior Citizens and a member of the Eastern Star. She was director of the citywide Senior Citizens Golden Age Choral Group and worked with the Golden Age Project.
Margaret was born in Georgia and came to Newark at age by 1930. She was a graduate of Florida A&M University. In 1930 and 1940 she lived on Newton and then Wickliffe Streets, and in 1950 on Wilsey Street. She taught evening classes at Central Avenue School.

Margaret was also a member of the WNJR Volunteer Radio Workers, United Community Corp and the Newark NAACP. She was past president of the Christian Fellowship Women at Bethany Baptist Church. She served as chairman of the Citizen Advisory Board, was active in the American Negro Assembly, Association of Business and Professional Womens Clubs, and National Association of Fashions Accessory and Design.
