1814-1897

Susan was a member of the first class of the New York Women’s Medical College, which graduated 1865. She practiced as a physician until four years before her death. She practiced for several years in Newark (city directories through 1870) and then in New York.

“It was because of her desire to help the poor and the sick in the best possible way and not in order to add to her income that she took up the practice of medicine. She devoted her life to the poor and never took a fee from one she thought could not afford to pay it.” – New York Times

Susan was a member of the American Institute of Homeopathy. She was born in Mendham but raised in Newark. She can be found on the 1850 census in what was then Newark’s East Ward.

Susan died in New York but is buried in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Newark.
