1948-

Sandy King was the host of Emmy Award Winning Due Process which has won two dozen regional Emmys. She is an award-winning producer and anchor of news, documentaries, and public affairs programs.

Sandy King was born in Newark and graduated with the Weeqauhic Class of 1965 and from Rutgers Newark. She began writing articles for the Star Ledger in 1969 and became an urban affairs reporter, working for the Ledger through 1978.

In 1978, she became a senior reporter on New Jersey Nightly News, then a new production and married Ramon Scruggs. She hosted NJ Nightly News for many years, also doing special productions like one on Newark’s graffiti artists in 1986, an interview with Gov. Hughes in 1988, an special with Newark’s Rev. Brian Jefferson Mosley in 1988, and a documentary on the Newark Boys Chorus in 1989. Also, in the late 1980s, she filmed the award winning documentary Newark: The Slow Road Back, Newark Then Newark Now and in 1992 Rage in America: Voices from Newark. She also hosted the 1994 mayoral debate in 1994.

In 1995, she began hosting Due Process and in 1997 won two Emmys for the show and was nominated for 22! She said, “I think due process is what sets us apart from other countries…at least we give lip service to this incredibly complex principle.” Overall the show has won 25 local Emmys and 100+ nominations. Season 22 aired in 2018.

Sandy has served on the Board of Newark Public Library, Branch Brook Park Alliance, and NJ Institute for Social Justice. She was the recipient of Neiman Fellowship at Harvard in 1998.

Sandy has received the Thurgood Marshall Fund’s Civic Achievement Award, and has been named Rutgers-Newark Alumna of the Year, NJ Citizen Action’s Media Person of the Year, and a National Organization for Women “Role Model.” In 2008, she was inducted into the first class of the Weequahic High School Hall of Fame.
