Rose Slavitt was the first woman to manage a department at Prudential Insurance Co in 1952. She was manager of Debit Policy Division 2 and worked for Prudential for many years, starting a messenger. She said, “This is a terrific challenge to me…The confidence my superiors have shown by giving me this promotion is half the battle. They think I can do the job and I’m going to do my best to justify their faith in me…I’ve tried to do my very best in every job I had and here I am now.”

Rose was born in Newark to Russian Jewish parents, but spent some of her childhood in New York (1910) and some in Newark (1905, Bruce Street; 1915, Belmont Ave). Despite being listed on the census in NY in 1910, her at her siblings were listed at Eighteenth Avenue School in Newark and Rose graduated Eighteenth Avenue School in Jun 1910.

Rose moved to East Orange in 1922, but worked at Prudential in Newark.

Rose liked theater, books, music, art and travel and had traveled worldwide, saying she’d been to Europe, Bermuda, Mexico and Central America, and Italy and Switzerland were her favorite countries.

She is buried in Temple Sharey Tefilo-Israel Cemetery.
