1864-1947

Librarian of the New Jersey Historical Society for over 25 years, when it was on West Park Street in Newark.

Maud E Johnson was a graduate of Pratt Library School 1899. She organized the library of poet William Cullen Bryant, before being hired by the NJ Historical Society in 1902.

She was the only staff member when she arrived and had to buy everything new and there was only a rough arrangement. She stated “I have acted as reference librarian, head cataloger, order clerk, first assistant to the corresponding secretary, the treasurer, the recording secretary, the chairman of the membership, etc….Many thousands of people from all parts of the country have come to me with questions. I have helped to collect material for scores of books and for thousands of newspaper and magazine articles.”

Around 1930, she moved to the Cooperstown area due to ill health and died in Oswego, NY in 1947.
