Mary Hine was active in Newark civil work, including as 18 year president of the YMCA.

Mary was born in Connecticut and married Charles C Hine in St. Louis, MO in 1853. Charles was an insurance journalist, publisher and editor, also working in banking and teaching in his early career. The couple and their three sons, settled in Newark in the year of 1866-1867, becoming one of the early families to settle the Woodside neighborhood. They lived at 209 Washington Ave, where Mary lived until her death.

Mary Hine was the third President of the YMCA and served for eighteen years. Later, she remained as honorary president. Mary was also President of the New Jersey Branch of the American Indian Association.

Mary was a charter member of Newark’s Christ Church and on her death, she was its oldest member. She was a teacher at Woodside Sunday School. She was an officer in the Union Women’s Missionary Society, Newark branch, and organized the Zenana Mission Band. The Zenana Mission Band was a biweekly meeting of women, where they would prepare all kinds of materials from embroidery to ice cream for an annual fair, raising money for missionaries.

Mary is buried in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. She was the mother of Charles Gilbert Hine whose papers are at Newark Library.
