1880-1965
Jessie L Creamer was one of the founders of the College Women’s Club of Essex County in 1903 and president from 1912-1913. She taught at Belleville High and later is listed as a secretary for an auto service (1920 census). She was honored by the Club in 1960 and 1963. She was also a a charter member of the Newark Institute of Arts and Sciences in 1909, which later became part of the Newark University, and then Rutgers.
Jessie said the club was founded because “there were so many things…for college girls to be interested in and to discuss.”
Jessie was born in Newark in 1880 and was a Feb 1898 graduate of Newark High School. She lived at 330 Summer Ave. She attended the Women’s College of Baltimore (Goucher) and graduated in 1903. Her 1903 yearbook noted she was “a great success as a dramatic artist” with “a strong personality”. In the yearbook she had a joke Want Ad stating, “Newark School Board: Want position as a school teacher, $90000 a year.”
Jessie married famed photographer William Cone in 1924, at age 44.
