1870-1949

Jenny H Morris was secretary of the NJ Women’s Suffrage Association and Newark News reporter from 1914 until her retirement in 1946.

From her biography on the Alexander Street Suffrage database: Ms. Morris covered education, welfare movements, and women’s organizations. She wrote under the byline “J.H. Morris” because “at the time Ms. Morris came on The News there were very few women reporters in the field and a feeling still existed against them.”

Jenny ran the Fresh Air Fund campaign for the News from 1920 until her retirement. She was active in the campaign for Branch Brook School, for special needs children.

In retirement, she did freelance writing, the Board of education hired her in 1948 to edit their annual report.

Born 1871, she lived with her mother in Bordentown. Her mother Lydia Higbee was a founding member of the Moorestown Equal Suffrage League. While working on the News, Jenny lived in Newark in the winters. In summers, she left the house at 5AM to arrive in Newark at 8AM. As secretary of the Women’s Suffrage Association she participated in many actions and rallies.
