Jane E Johnson was the first principal of the Normal School, for teacher training, in 1879. She started the school with 30 students. She remained with the school for 21 years, later becoming Vice Principal when it merged with the Training School.
Jane taught, “psychology, science, history of education, mental philosophy and pedagogy” and had “high ideals and lifelong devotion to her work.”
After leaving the school, Jane frequently returned to Newark and kept in touch with many of the women she taught. There was a memorial tablet placed in the Normal School to her work and a memorial prize given in her honor.
Born in Utica, New York, Jane came to Newark in 1879. She left Newark in 1900 and died in Mexico, New York.
