In 1956, Gloria Jones was believed to be the first blind student ever elected to the National Honor Society, while she was at Barringer High School. She was an A student and also involved in many clubs and planned to go to Boston University.
She was possibly one the first blind students in NJ to complete all 12 primary grades when she graduated in 1957, though Mary and Louise Curcio graduated South Side in the 1920s.
Later, she moved to Maryland where she founded Children’s Adoption Resource Agency, was Maryland State Chair of ACORN, helped found Communities United, and serves on the Prince George’s County Commission for Individuals with Disabilities and the board of Maryland United for Peace and Justice.
