1855-1922
Emily (Coe) Jenkinson (d. 1922) served as president of the Newark YWCA for more than 20 years. The Sunday Call listed her in 1922 as one of 50 people who had done the most for Newark.
Emily was born in Newark to George and Mary Coe. The family moved to Fulton, Illinois. Both Emily’s parents died when she was 13 and 14 in the start of 1869. Her father’s death notice in the Sentinel of Freedom said he died from “diseases contracted by exposure in the Army”.
It is unclear where Emily was in 1870, but her two surviving siblings (of 7 total) were back in Newark, so it’s likely she returned to Newark around that time. Emily married Richard Jenkinson in Newark in 1876.
Emily was also President of the Board for Home for Incurables, which later combined with the YWCA.
