1875-1952

A native of Newark who practiced in Newark from 1900-1952, for 52 years. She was active in the Newark Equal Suffrage League and a charter member of Zonta International. She was active in the Essex County Medical Society, practicing at multiple hospitals.

She was educated in Newark and a graduate of the New York Medical College.

There was controversy after Smalley and Margaret Laird were rejected from the Newark Board of Health in 1915 because they were women. Smalley was supported by the NJ State Federation of Women’s Clubs and other women’s groups.

One paper Smalley wrote was an early paper on an intersex person.
