c. 1846 – Jan 31, 1904

Born about 1846 in New England, Clara W. Greene was vice principal of Newark High School (now Barringer), or Principal/Head of the Female Department, for 25 years, which was only integrated into the Male Department around 1899.

According to her obituary, she revolutionized the curriculum of the High School, particularly the English curriculum. She had taken courses at Columbia and Oxford. She also organized the Montague Society at the school.

The Newark News wrote, “During Miss Greene’s vice-principalship…it is estimated that 2000 young women have been graduated and many of the women now teaching at the school were ‘Miss Greene’s girls’. She was an extremely modest women and no one will know just how many young girls she assisted to get an education. She was a personal friend to every girl under her instruction who sought her friendship.”

The 1904 Acropolis student newsletter, quoted in the 1938 Barringer yearbook wrote, “The thought of her shall influence us to gentle speech, courteous act, fine and noble thought. The lessons that she gave us are not over, they still teach.”

She was previously Vice Principal at Morristown school.
