Anna F. Whitmore was the founder of girls school: the Newark Seminary and principal for 47 years.

Anna founded the school in 1881 at 27 Hill Street as “Miss Whitmore’s English and French Day School”. Five years later she moved to 993 Broad and then 174 Clinton Avenue in 1901. In 1926, the school moved to 121 Clinton Ave. Anna was principal of the school until 1928, a total of 47 years. Prominent women attending her school included Florence Eagleton.

Anna was a lifelong Newark resident, born at Hill and Halsey Streets to descendants of Newark’s founders. She attended Newark public schools, Newark High School, the Newark Normal School (1868) and Vassar. She was elected head of the National Council of Women of the Civic Alliance in 1910.
