Abigail Malmgreen was a lifelong political activist, who lived to 100.
Abigail was a member of the United Nations Association, Americans for Democratic Action, the NAACP, the Congress of Racial Equality, the Givat Haviva Educational Association and the National Committee for a Sane Nuclear Policy (now New Jersey Peace Action) and was an organizer of the Newark contingent to the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom and the 1965 March on Washington for Peace in Vietnam.
A regular on picket lines and at peace and civil rights demonstrations, Abigail acted as surrogate mother to dozens of young people involved in social action in Newark. In the mid-1960s, she was a candidate for the U.S. Congress on a Peace and Freedom Party (New Frontier Democrats, United Political Freedom Party) ticket headed by Senatorial candidate George Richardson.
Abigail (born Abigail Paskow) was a 1926 Graduate of Barringer High. She worked at Bamberger’s Department Store and then for the Newark Welfare Department.
