1885-1965
Born in MA, attended Mt. Holyoke College and then came to work at Newark Library in 1907 for John Cotton Dana. She became head of lending and then assistant librarian, the secondary position in the library to Beatrice Winser, from 1930-1942, the first assistant after the death of John Cotton Dana, and the same position Winser had held for Dana. She was briefly Acting Librarian after Winser left but resigned in support of Winser.
She broadened services in the industrial, scientific and technical field. She was interested in typography and in charge of publications and notices. She also collected picture books.
She left Newark Library for Montclair where she worked with an early IBM system.
Gates was active in the library world, serving as president of NJLA and on various national committees.
