Griselda Ellis considered herself “Newark born and bred”. She was appointed Principal of the Girls Vocational School in 1914 and remained so until her retirement in 1927. She said, “If I had my life to live over again I would certainly go into teaching.”
Griselda helped grow the school from 40 to 400 pupils. She said, “We are a school for a fine type of girl who can come here to learn a definite trade and go out into the world and be a wage-earner.” Griselda tried various jobs herself, so she could “see exactly what those girls were up against.”
Previously, from at least 1890-1900 she was an Assistant Teacher at Camden Street School. By 1904 she was a Model and Critic Teacher at the Newark Normal School, a position which she held until 1914. She graduated from the Normal School in 1888. For many years she lived at 209 South 6th Street.
