Dr. Sarah D. Smalley

1875-1952

A native of Newark who practiced in Newark from 1901-1952. She was active in the Newark Equal Suffrage League and a charter member of Zonta International. She was active in the Essex County Medical Society, practicing at multiple hospitals.

She was educated in Newark and a graduate of the New York Medical College. There was controversy after Smalley and Margaret Laird were appointed to the Newark Board of Health as women. Smalley was supported by the NJ State Federation of Women’s Clubs and other women’s groups. One paper she wrote was an early paper on an intersex person.
